The pivot to Asia

Australia is at a fascinating turning point in its political history. The changes in the economy, which have pushed mining and natural resources to the forefront of the nation’s discussions have also had several other impacts on the way politics and business are done in Australia. For a start, Asia has become much more important in any Australian political discussion. This is because natural resources are primarily exported to countries nearby.

At the same time, the knowledge economy, the other sector of Australian activity that has had a particularly good time over the last decade or so, has become far more plugged in to the Asian market, it’s now just as common for traders in Australia to be collaborating with their colleagues in Shanghai or Hong Kong as it is for them to be working with people in London and New York.

This has also been driven in part by a large wave of immigration from the countries that Australia is now working so closely with economically. This sort of changes has put pressure on the political system and has exposed an underbelly that many Australians have been unhappy to see. With so much change in the air, it’s more important than ever that all Australians and everyone who has to deal with Australia in their day to day work, stays totally up to date with the political happenings in the country, our aim is to provide the resources and knowledge that allow all of our users to do exactly that.

The Australian economy

Away from the big economic decisions, things are equally fraught on the main political stage. Following the Coalition’s surprise victory over Labor in the 2019 Federal election, it looks like politics in the country could take a very different path from the one that most commentators were expecting even the night before the election. For many observers and participants in Australian politics, this will mean ripping up and rewriting much of the painstaking analysis and insight that they had put together over the last few years. For example, the sweeping climate change measures that many were expecting a new Labor government to implement quickly following an election victory in 2019 will now not be put into place. However, it is possible that pressure from state level will force the Liberal government to act on some of the policies that Labor would have put into place.

The other potential roadblock on the horizon is any downturn in the natural resources sector that has made Australia so successful over the last few years. This could work counter to any of the climate change initiatives that have been proposed by Labor since a drop in production activity would take care of the country’s rising emissions anyway.

Will all of this stuff in flux, there is a huge amount for any follower of Australian politics to keep an eye on – keep up to date with our resources and info on this site.
